Nothing changes if nothing changes
It only takes one search or joining an Italian dual citizenship group to discover that getting a jure sanguinis citizenship appointment at an Italian consulate is near impossible. Appointments are usually opened up in small batches, and it’s a literal race to claim one before the thousands of other people trying to get them.
As an Italian by descent, it’s your legal right to have access to an appointment within a reasonable amount of time. So if the law isn’t being followed, you have recourse to force the consulate to process your citizenship.
There’s definitely a tension here. Some people believe that suing the consulate will slow down the process for everyone else. And this logic is certainly understandable. Here’s the problem…
The system is broken.
People have been waiting their turn, hoping the consulates get organized for years. Nothing has improved. In fact, it’s gotten worse. Some consulates have stopped offering appointments indefinitely.
It’s going to take massive action to change the system-level dysfunction. So that’s what we’re doing.
